Woman dies by suicide at Goodyear State Prison in Arizona

A 24-year-old woman committed suicide in an Arizona state prison.

According to the Department of Corrections, Mackenzie Catalano “died on April 7, 2022 of an apparent act of self-harm by hanging” at Perryville Jail in Goodyear, Arizona.

“Custodial staff discovered her unconscious at her residence early Thursday afternoon and took lifesaving action,” DOC spokeswoman Judy Keane said in a statement.

“Paramedics transported Catalano to the Abrazo West campus. She was pronounced dead later that evening by hospital staff,” Keane said.

Records show that Catalano was due out in three months. According to the most recent data provided by the Department of Corrections, Catalano is the sixth person to die by suicide in an Arizona prison since July 1, 2021.

Arizona records mortality data by fiscal year, which begins July 1 and ends June 30 each year.

There have been an average of seven reported suicides each year in Arizona prisons over the past three fiscal years.
