Paradise Valley – Richard Wand, 82, of Paradise Valley, AZ passed away peacefully on January 15, 2022. Richard was born in Shelbyville, IN to J Harold and Josephine Wand. After attending high school in Columbus, IN, Richard earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University and a Masters of Business Administration from Indiana University in 1964. Also in 1964, Richard married the love of his life, Sharon Brierly. While pursuing a PhD at Indiana University, Richard led technical operations at the Aerospace Research Applications Center. In 1965 Richard and Sharon moved to Neenah, WI where Richard began his career in the paper industry with Bergstrom Paper Company. He and Sharon had two children, Brian and Katharine, in Neenah. After Bergstrom Paper Company merged with PH Glatfelter Company, Richard, Sharon, Brian and Katharine moved to York, Pennsylvania where Richard became Vice President – ​​Administration of PH Glatfelter Company. Richard continued in the paper business until his retirement in 1995. While at York, Richard served as Director of York County Junior Achievement, Director of the York Region Chamber of Commerce, Director of Syracuse University Pulp & Paper Foundation, Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Pulp Consumers Board of the American Paper Institute, Director of the Strand Capitol Performing Arts Center, and Director of the York Foundation. Richard and Sharon moved to Paradise Valley, AZ in 1995 and continued to follow their passion for collecting Native American art. As part of their appreciation of different cultures, Richard and Sharon have undertaken travels around the world including Spain, France, Norway, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Australia, China, Russia, Hungary , Romania, Mongolia, Siberia, Myanmar, India and Sri Lanka. , and Thailand. Richard is survived by his wife, Sharon; son Brian of Paradise Valley, AZ; his daughter Katharine (David DeSante) of St. Helena, California; 3 grandchildren: Spencer, Brierly and Marcus; and half-sister Phyllis of Lakeville, MN. Richard will be remembered for his devotion to all those he loved. He was quick to lend a hand and step in to help a friend or family member in need. He treasured his friendships and enjoyed learning about cultures around the world. Richard was involved in his church and devout in his faith. He had the unique ability to solve almost any problem as long as he had a notepad and a pencil. His incredible analytical skills not only sustained him professionally, but also his lively and dry sense of humor. Richard enjoyed spending time with his family, and even while battling Alzheimer’s disease, he managed to smile wryly at everyone around him, especially when he heard the name of his wife, Sharon. There will be a memorial service for Richard at the Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Paradise Valley, AZ on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at 11 a.m. Donations can be made to the Purdue University Foundation “Steven C.
