Reverend Jack H. Zoellner

Scottsdale – Reverend Jack H. Zoellner died on December 23, 2021 in Scottsdale, AZ. He was born in Saginaw, MI, the son of loving parents Walther J. and Elsa I. (Frisch) Zoellner. Jack enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and served on active duty in the Pacific with the 3rd Marine Division. He then served in Tientsin, China.

Jack earned his bachelor’s degree from Capital University in Columbus, OH, and continued his graduate studies at Kent State University, OH. He graduated from Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and later completed his graduate studies in clinical psychology in California.

Reverend Zoellner served as a naval chaplain in Japan, Okinawa and Korea. His 60 years of ministry have taken him to congregations in Plains, GA; USMC Army Base Chapel at Twentynine Palms, California; Monterey Park, California; Westwood Village Church, Westwood, California; St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, Santa Cruz, CA; and Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Tucson, AZ. He was the founding pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church, Scottsdale, AZ. For eight years he served as assistant to the synod president and worked with the National Lutheran Church in America. Jack was honored at the Vatican in Rome, for his work for justice and peace.

He leaves behind his daughter, Susan Eleanor Phillips of Scottsdale and his grandchildren Dane Nielsen, Mark and Eric Phillips. He was predeceased by his 66-year-old wife, Eleanor Robinson Zoellner; his daughter Gretchen Elizabeth Zoellner Nielsen and his brothers Howard and Donald.

A private memorial service will be held at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Phoenix.

Memorial contributions may be made to Dane Nielsen’s continuing higher education, mailed to Aunt Susan Phillips.
