Named hockey captains, Josh Doan wears the ‘C’

TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Hockey Head Coach Greg Powers announced the group of captains for the 2022-23 season on Friday morning. Originally from Scottsdale Josh Doan is captain, accompanied by a qualified striker Demetrios Koumontzis and senior defender Jacob Semik as alternate captains for the highly anticipated inaugural season at Mullett Arena.

“This leadership group is ready for the challenge ahead of us,” Powers said. “All three are bleeding brown and gold all over the place and I’m incredibly excited to see all of their success this season.”

Doan is coming off a stellar freshman year after setting two ASU single-season records for total points (37) and assists by a freshman (25) and a run as a finalist for the Tim Taylor Rookie of the Year award. The Arizona Coyotes draft pick has played all 35 possible games throughout his first season, averaging more than a point per game. He also played in 10 multi-point games last season, including three games with at least three points.

Entering his fifth year with the program, Koumontzis finished last season with four goals, seven assists and a +7 in 23 games. Another Scottsdale native, Koumontzis wore the “A” last year at Oceanside Ice Arena in 2021-22.

A senior this season, Semik was awarded the role of alternate captain for the second time. He served as an ‘A’ alongside Koumontzis last year while appearing in 34 games. Semik leads by example in the classroom and received Pac-12 All-Academic honors and won the Krampade All-American Scholar Award (must have a GPA of 3.75 or higher) in 2021-22.

The three will lead a 28-man team into a new era of Sun Devil Hockey at Mullett Arena. ASU’s season opener is Oct. 1 at Minnesota Duluth and the home opener is against Colgate on Oct. 14.
