Herm Edwards’ return as Arizona State football coach sparks backlash

News broke after Arizona State’s 38-15 win over Arizona on Saturday night that Herm Edwards will likely be back for a fifth season with the Sun Devils next season.

ASU fans had their thoughts on the news.

They raised the possibility of Edwards returning to Tempe next season on Twitter and Facebook.

In a Twitter poll azcentral sports, 42% of voters said ASU should fire Edwards as a coach, not retain him for next season. 37.9% said the Arizona State program should keep Edwards.

20% voted that the Sun Devils should await the results of the NCAA’s investigation into ongoing recruiting allegations with the program before the school makes a decision on the coach’s future at the school .

Many ASU fans weren’t thrilled with the news of Edwards’ return:

Warren Brannoch (on Facebook): “Not a fan of keeping him in the middle of an investigation, broken promises from the administration, one of the most penalized teams in the country, etc…why would you keep him? Ray Anderson said expecting 9-10 wins a year and big bowl games Ummm am I missing something here?

Joe Love (on Facebook): No, all of their staff should be fired. Herm kept a guy at quarterback who couldn’t read a defense or hit an open receiver most of the time. They lost games they should have won. They lost due to poor play, sloppy team play and numerous penalties for a team coached by a former NFL coach. He had his chance and everything the sporting director thought he could achieve with this experience should have been extraordinary and not average. Times until you drop the hammer.

Kevin D. Miller (on Facebook): Nobody wants to see that. More than 100 penalties. Another repeat of Erikson. The stadium will be half full. Pass. Graham did much better.

Others thought it was a good move by Arizona State to bring Edwards back:

Chris Bruening (on Facebook): “So you’re firing Herm and who are you going to get with USC, LSU, Wash and other great schools looking? You think ASU has the clout and popularity to attract a coach against those 3? Be realistic. Herm has to stay. Was the smart thing to do.

Boomer Berman (on Facebook): “Glad to hear it. Let’s take the H train and see what happens. Another season of J. Daniels under his belt is nothing but positive…And not too worried about the fate of these so-called impending ‘sanctions’ will bring. In the grand scheme of college infractions, they don’t seem too egregious”

Keith Newman (on Facebook): “I’m fine with keeping Herm as long as the team cleans up the excessive number of penalties next year. They may also have to drop all the assistants who broke the COVID rules and Zak Hill who didn’t. failed to develop Daniels and the WR.IMO, they still have plenty of talent to finish with 8-10 wins next year and that’s before they run through the transfer portal to fill the holes. -the, 8 or more wins is rare for this program (14 times in the last 40 years) let alone 2 times in the last 4 seasons I know we all want and expect more this season but let’s count the blessings we have….could be a lot worse, like 1-11. GO DEVILS!!”
