Gary Lee Sepp Obituary – The Arizona Republic

Gary Lee Sepp, 74, of Phoenix, died Sunday, October 10, 2021 at his home.

Gary was born in Champaign, Illinois, and was the son of Raymond and Thelma Sepp. He attended the American Lutheran Church in Rantoul. He always held a special place in his heart for his IL family. Gary graduated from Carthage College in Kenosha, WI with a BA in Physics. As an SSgt in the US Air Force, he served in the United States, then in Thailand, and was eventually stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson. Gary has held various sales positions including commercial leasing, life and health insurance and real estate. Once retired, he enjoyed working part-time in retail at Allied Surplus with their surplus military supplies.

Gary was the epitome of “a stranger is a friend you haven’t met yet”. He was Facebook before FB. If it was your birthday, you would receive a personal phone call from him to let you know he was thinking of you on your “special” day.

He was a member of the Master’s Lutheran Church in Phoenix, AZ and served as LCOM Liaison with Camp Aloma in Prescott, AZ. Gary was also a member of U-Tapao, an AF buddy group that served in Thailand. He loved the outdoors – camping, hunting and scouting for the next elk hunt. If you were traveling, he would pull out his Rand McNally road atlas to help you plan your trip, then share who he knew along the way to help you if you needed it.

One of his proudest accomplishments was earning his light-sport pilot’s license at age 70 through his son’s (Tyler) flight school. He liked to read books, especially novels by Louis L’Amour, and anything to do with history. Additionally, he was also an amateur radio operator and was dedicated to learning this unique communication skill. Gary will be remembered for his wit, corny jokes, teaching gun safety, dedication to helping others, and (of course) wearing his unique vest and hat. He was a second “dad” to many of his children’s friends and enjoyed being there for them over the years.

He is survived by his wife, Patty, and was married for 43 years; daughter Tami (Tamale) (and granddogs Lucy, Edgar, Obie), sons Todd and Carrie Sepp, and their children, Reagan and Jack; sons Tyler and Valerie Sepp, and their son, Colton, (and little dogs, Zee-Zee and Muschu); daughter Traci and Kaoru (K.) Fujita (and big dog, Billie Jean) and is predeceased by his brother, Gene Sepp and sister, Kay Sepp.

The memorial service and a celebration of life after the service will be held on Saturday, January 15 at 11:00 a.m. at The Master’s Lutheran Church, 2340 West Cactus Road, Phoenix. Remote viewing options available via Zoom for those unable to travel. The Zoom link will be sent the week before. Sign up for the Zoom link here:

Gary’s burial ceremony will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery (Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery), 23029 North Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, AZ 85024 at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 14. Private family ceremony.
