Countdown to the start of the 2022 season

Arizona State’s 2022 football season kicks off Thursday when the Sun Devils host Northern Arizona at 7 p.m.

Sure, on paper this should be a walk for ASU against the lower division Lumberjacks, though we’d have to point to the scoreboard at Arizona Stadium last September 18 when NAU knocked out Arizona 21- 19. As Herm Edwards once said, “You play to win the game.”

So what should we expect from the Sun Devils in Edwards’ fifth season as head coach? The Arizona Republic has spent the summer trying to answer that question. Will the Sun Devils build on an 8-5 season that included a trip to the Las Vegas Bowl? Or will the turnover of the team made up of last year’s veterans be too much to overcome?

Countdown to ASU Football Kickoff for the 2022 Season

Our ASU insider Michelle Gardner writes about how the Sun Devils are embracing the underdog role in the Pac-12 amid heavy turnover this season.

Columnist Kent Somers is on the same page, writing about how low expectations may be one of the few things ASU football has for this season.

Columnist Greg Moore takes a slightly different view, writing that he thinks Herm Edwards could have everyone where he wants them, with the Sun Devils possibly much better than most people think this season.

And what are the players saying? Here’s a compilation of some of the best quotes to come out of ASU’s preseason camp.

Gardner broke down the season into six scenarios for the 2022 Sun Devils to follow, scenarios that will determine the team’s success.

She also presented unit-by-unit overviews that looked at the team’s strengths and challenges. You can find them here:

What Do Pac-12 Football Title Odds Say?

How do bettors and pundits think the Pac-12 season will play out? Their preferred conference loyalties seem to be split between USC, Utah and Oregon to win the title, and there wasn’t much love for Arizona schools.

What about the future of the Pac-12?

And speaking of the beleaguered Pac-12, we’ve been following the latest happenings since Los Angeles schools announced plans to jump into the Big Ten in 2024.
