Tempe – Carolyn Mae Ashby Hughes (94) died Saturday, March 26, 2022 in Tempe, Arizona. She was born in Hastings, NE on October 30, 1927 to Lloyd W. Ashby and Lois Thelma Irwin. She married William (Bill) Hughes on March 5, 1952 in Philadelphia, PA. They had been married for 66 years at the time of Bill’s death on June 21, 2018. Carolyn grew up in Nebraska and Indiana, but spent most of her adult life in New York, Florida and Arizona. She received her BA from the University of Omaha in 1949 and began her career in teaching. Shortly after their marriage, she and Bill moved to New York where they lived until their retirement.

Carolyn retired after 25 years of teaching. She was passionate about helping

kindergartens and first graders develop a love of learning. In addition to her dedication to teaching, Carolyn was a dedicated wife, mother, family member, friend and volunteer. Throughout her life, she was active in her church and various charities and philanthropic organizations. She was a life member of PEO, an organization that helps women advance their education. Her hobbies were sewing/quilting, travelling, reading and attending friendship groups.

Upon retirement, Carolyn and Bill traveled extensively across the United States and overseas. From 1986 to 2000 they lived in the Moorings in Ruskin, Florida. They then resided for 12 years in the retirement community of Sun Lakes before moving to Friendship Village Tempe in 2012. Carolyn is survived by her three daughters, Cathy Rogers (Gary), Judy Lee (Bob) and Margaret Uhle (Ken ) and his 5 grandchildren. , 2 great-grandchildren, a step-granddaughter and a step-great-granddaughter.
