“I’m truly honored to be honored like this and to have it come from my peers,” said Brand, who has been a key figure in the athletic department for nearly 39 years. “It’s really quite overwhelming.”
Brand received the good news during a video call from his daughters Lindsey and Ashley, who were told by Doug Tammaro, ASU’s assistant athletic director who is in charge of media for golf and men’s basketball. Brand’s nomination was spearheaded by Paul Kirk, who previously worked for Brand and is now senior associate athletic director for strategic communications at the University of Utah.
“It was definitely even more special coming from them,” Brand said.
Brand, a 1981 Purdue graduate, came to ASU in 1983 as assistant director of sports information for baseball, men’s basketball and soccer. He became director of sports information in 1987 and worked as a member of ASU’s senior management for several years, overseeing football publicity, managing the budget, and managing the football schedule.
Prior to his time at ASU, Brand was assistant director of sports information at East Carolina University from 1981 to 1983. At ECU, Brand served as publicity director for baseball, women’s basketball, soccer , athletics, swimming and diving, and assisted with men’s football and basketball, publishing media guides and match schedules.
Brand served as media coordinator for 11 first and second rounds and NCAA men’s and women’s basketball regional championships at ASU. He has been a board member and vice president of The Valley of the Sun chapter of the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame since 1989. Recently, Brand was selected to be a member of the District 7 Selection Committee . from the National Football Foundation and the College Hall of Fame. Brand has won several CoSIDA awards for his publications.
He says he and his wife Lori never saw the need to go anywhere else. Both girls are ASU graduates and live locally.
“ASU is a fantastic place to work,” he said. “The people here are special and there’s a great, dynamic environment. It’s a great place to raise a family.”
