This poll heading into Week 5 of the Arizona high school softball season sounds like a game of musical chairs.
Last week’s No. 1 team, Oro Valley Canyon Del Oro, lost to Tucson Salpointe Catholic. Additionally, the losses of Phoenix Xavier Prep, Peoria Centennial, Surprise Willow Canyon and Phoenix Desert Vista caused a huge shift for teams such as Phoenix Pinnacle and Sabino to move several spots to the top behind Salpointe.
Additionally, Phoenix Desert Vista dropped out of the top 10 after losing twice, paving the way for Cottonwood Mingus to debut.
Here’s a breakdown of the top 10 performances by teams across the state in Week 4 of the 2021 season:
1. Catholic Salpointe, 9-0
Salpointe knocked out Canyon del Oro 8-2 on April 6 and Tucson Cholla on Friday 19-1.
2. Summit, 9-1
The Pioneers jumped two spots in this week’s poll after picking up three wins. That includes a 10-0 shutout of Anthem Boulder Creek on April 6, defeated Willow Canyon 3-2 in a nine-inning thriller on Thursday, and Friday Pinnacle rode Glendale Mountain Ridge, 11-0.
3. Surprise Paradise Honors, 10-0
Paradise Honors moved up five sports and remains undefeated as they topped Buckeye Youngker in their home-and-away series on April 6 and Friday, winning 23-4, 25-0.
4. Tucson Sabino, 11-0
The Sabercats moved up five spots this week and are still undefeated after beating Tucson Tanque Verde at home in a road win on April 6 and Friday, 6-3 and 11-1 respectively.
5. Gold Canyon, 8-1
After CDO’s loss at Salpointe, the Dorados picked up a win over Tucson Catalina Foothills, 6-1. The loss dropped CDO four spots to fifth place this week in its poll.
6. Xavier Prep, 7-1
The Gators started Week 4 suffering their first home loss of the season by Chandler Hamilton, 6-4, sending them down five notches this week. Xavier bounced back in their next two games against two other same-city teams, Basha and Chandler, routing them 12-0 and 10-0.
7. Centennial, 7-1
The Coyotes dropped the same number of spots as Xavier in this week’s poll after Centennial split with Yuma Gila Ridge in a home-and-away series. Centennial won 3-1 on April 6 and then Friday 4-2 at home. Centennial also beat Glendale Raymond Kellis, 13-3, on Saturday.
8. Marana Mountain View, 9-1
The Mountain Lions moved up two places to sixth after beating Case Grande in eight sets, 5-2, on April 6 and Marana, 13-2, two days later.
The undefeated Marauders enter the top 10 after their 12-1 rout of Phoenix Shadow Mountain on April 5, then sweeping Coconino the next day and Thursday, 9-2, 10-3.
10. Willow Canyon, 11-1
Willow Canyon had a busy Week 4 playing four games between April 6-9. The Wildcats started the week thrashing Phoenix North Canyon, 27-0, earning an 11-1 victory over Cave Creek Cactus Shadows, losing at Pinnacle, and earning a 17-0 win over Glendale. Willow Canyon drops three spots after last week’s ranking.
