Arizona high school athletes to be honored by Arizona Republic, azcentral at Thursday’s event

Shaquille O’Neal, NBA Hall of Famer and broadcast analyst for TNT, will join four-time Olympic gold medalist, four-time WNBA champion and four-time World Cup champion Sue Bird to announce the Male and Female Athletes of the Year for the Arizona High School Athletic Awards.

Arizona’s top high school athletes in more than 20 boys’ and girls’ sports will be honored Thursday at the Arizona High School Sports Awards event. The free on-demand broadcast will begin at 6:00 p.m. MST and will feature some of the biggest names in professional sports to honor high school athletes selected by Arizona Republic athletic staff for performances throughout the year. school year 2020-21.

During the on-demand broadcast, top professional athletes and sportscasters will present these winners, along with the top three runners-up and Athlete of the Year for each sport.

The Awards Showcase will also include other high-profile awards for student-athlete, coach and team achievements on and off the court, including awards for College Athlete of the Year, High Performance Group , Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, and Male and Female Athlete of the Year.

Other top athletes expected to attend the event include three-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers; Two-time FIFA World Cup soccer champion Alex Morgan; five-time Olympic gold medalist in swimming Katie Ledecky; Lindsey Vonn, Olympic gold medalist and four-time world ski champion; 2020 NFL Returning Player of the Year Alex Smith; three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings; Baseball Hall of Famer Chipper Jones; United States women’s gymnastics gold and silver medalist Laurie Hernandezl, three-time pro pitcher and two-time first-team All-Pro outside linebacker TJ Watt; tennis legend Martina Navratilova; and Kevin Garnett, NBA champion and 2020 Hall of Fame inductee.
